Lia Eshel (1997) is an interdisciplinary choreographer, director, dancer, and performer, born in New York and at the age of 13 moved to Israel/Palestine. She studied art at Bard College, graudated from of The School of Visual Theater in Jerusalem ,participated in “Creating Dancers Training Program” lead by Bossmat Nossan and in workshops led by Lilach Pnine Livne, May Zarhy, Nattan Dobkin etc. She participated as a collaborative performer at The Israel Festival, Acco Festival, and Jerusalem Festival. She showed her works at CCA, Tel Aviv, MASH- DANCEHOUSE in Jerusalem, Nublatz Gallery in Tel Aviv, and CMR- Choreography Material Research, JLM.
Lia’s works lay at the intersection between choreography, theater, and performance, using physical and emotional states to express the inner self. Lia's artistic process involves structured improvisations, deep listening to inner intuation, character-based physical research, and exploring grotesque beauty. Lia researches stereotypes and how self-objectification—shaped by the desires / gaze of others, manifest in physicality and theatrical movement on stage; looking for ways to reveal hidden emotions. Through the use of humor, existensial collective pain and exxaggerated expressions she attempts to blur the line between theater and reality and expose the heirarchy of societal structures.
